STEP UP Week One

STEP UP Participants - The Unusual Suspects!

Chloe Ward, Laura Free, Laura Macrae & Beth Shouler

We’ve just started our first ever ‘Summer School’ for up-and-coming East Midlands theatre makers – a dynamic bunch of young actors, director and designer working with us over an intensive two week period to create a rural touring show – in this case Arrivals/Departures based on a selection of the winning entries into our recent DREAM UP writing competition – it looks like it’s going to be a fascinating evening of theatre from a very talented young company.

The group are being mentored by New Perspectives’ Artistic Director, Daniel Buckroyd, and Production Manager, Mandy Ivory-Castile – whilst sound design comes from AdamMcCready who did such a fantastic job with the sound design for Wasteland.

Watch this space for blow-by-blow updates (plus photos/video) from the team!

Performances are scheduled for:

Friday 24th July – Aslockton Church & Saturday 25th July – Lakeside Arts Centre

Contact Emma Morley on 0115 973 9120 for tickets.

  1. Hi. Thought I’d add some info on the step up summer school. There are 7 of us involved with the project and working together to produce a piece of theatre using some selected monologues. It’s come to end of the first week and each of us has been given our character/monologue and plenty of support so far. At the start of the week it was great to improvise around ideas and get a feel for each of the pieces and how they might ‘fit together’ with themes etc. The difficult bit is now learning and really understanding the lines of the pieces and finding a way of making the voice ‘real’ to an audiecne. I am really enjoying the week of intense work and feel fully ‘absorbed’ in it. It has made me even more aware of the work an actor/writer may have to undergo in a short space of time, in order to develop work in the right direction and get it to it’s performance state. It’s a challenge but I am looking forward to the outcome!
